An IP scan tells you which addresses respond. That's the first step: but in a data center, the useful question is what sits behind each address: which server, which rack, which owner, what firmware, and what business service it supports. A ping sweep or port scan can't answer that.

Common Questions About IP Scanning
It enumerates a subnet. Enter a CIDR block such as 192.168.1.0/24 and it returns every usable host address in that range, with the count, ready to paste into a scanner, a discovery tool or a spreadsheet. It runs in your browser and sends nothing to the addresses it lists.
254. A /24 covers 256 addresses, of which the network address and the broadcast address are not assignable to hosts. The same rule gives 126 usable addresses in a /25, 62 in a /26 and 30 in a /27.
A /32 is a single address, usually a loopback or a host route. A /31 is a two-address point-to-point link where neither address is reserved, so both are usable. This tool lists both addresses for a /31 rather than subtracting a network and a broadcast.
An ICMP or ARP sweep is normally low impact, but aggressive port scanning can trigger intrusion detection or upset sensitive devices. Scan from a known source at a modest rate, and tell the security team it is running before they find it themselves.
That an address answered, and often a hostname, MAC address and open ports. It says nothing about the hardware behind the address, its configuration, its owner, or whether components under the operating system are degrading.
